FOOD OVER MEDICINE

"Chew On This Radio Conversation"

Over a year ago a friend and I went to a Vegan Festival in NYC.  There were various vendors demonstrating their products and seminars were given on alternatives of eating meatless.  Jazz Vegetarian, host Laura Theodore, gave a cooking demonstration on some of her vegan recipes.  I had video tape it (will post soon).  But, for now listen to her interview she did on Blog Talk Radio with Dr. Pam Popper on the topic "Food Over Medicine."

HOW DO YOU FEEL IN HAVING AN ANIMAL ORGAN INSIDE OF YOU?

"A Genetically Modified Pig's Lung"

You are probably asking yourself "What the hell?" or "Did I read that right?"  Well, it's being developed into research right now.  Scary, right?  I think so.  How is this suppose to work? And why would anyone would want to interchange an animal's organ with a human body.  According to a press release report from Reuters http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/05/06/us-health-transplants-pigs-idUSKBN0DM0JM20140506 Genome pioneer J. Craig Venter is coming together with United Therapeutics Corp to develop pig lungs that have been genetically altered to be a compatible match with humans.  If this procedure is successful, then patients with end stage lung disease can receive a transplant of this humanized pig organ.

I strongly feel this is just not right.  How can a human body react to an animal body part - two different species.  Am I right?  Is this a case of by any means necessary to live?

What is your take on this new developed research being conducted?

CHEW ON THIS...

"Is My Child Short on Vitamin D?"

An interesting question to ask oneself.  "Am I providing the adequate amount of Vitamin D3? And how will I know?  Only a blood test called 25 Hydroxy can determine for sure if there is a Vitamin D3 deficiency.  But, there are symptoms of Vitamin D3 deficiency signs that will "ring the alarm" letting you know something is not right.  Please be aware there isn't a clear pattern of symptoms.  Some people can be asymptomatic despite low levels.

Check out this interesting article "How to Make Sure your Kid Isn't Short on Vitamin D"  by Nancy Shute from the U.S. News Health http://health.usnews.com/health-news/blogs/on-parenting/2009/10/26/how-to-make-sure-your-kid-isnt-short-on-vitamin-d

Symptoms ...
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle pain
  • Joint pain
  • Chronic pain
  • Weight gain
  • High blood pressure
  • Restless sleep
  • Poor concentration
  • Headaches
  • Bladder problems
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • The flu

Here are the disease aliments of vitamin D deficient:

  • Cancer
  • Asthma
  • Periodontal disease
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Schizophrenia and Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Psoriasis
  • Muscle weakness
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Infertility and PMS
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Gout
  • Alzeheimer's Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Fibromyalgia

****Make you sure you have the doctor give you 25 Hydroxy test. Check at least once a year.  If you are supplementing, have the doctor monitor you every 3 months until you are at the optimal range (normal range) 50-80ng/ml.

Please be aware there are 3 three ways you can take the test.  Get in the know http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/

  1. Ask your doctor.  (Tell your doctor you want it done - otherwise he/she will not automatic test for it and he/she will probably conduct the wrong test)  Remember the name of the test 25 HYDROXY VITAMIN D.
  2. Order in home test kit.
  3. Order a test online and work have done at a blood laboratory.
  4.

BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY

"Spread The Health Knowledge"

I just stumbled upon a video made by Hip Hip Public Health and Partnership For A Healthier America on eating healthy and exercising.  Everyone should take a few minutes to watch, listen, and rock.  A health awareness song and video "Everybody" performed by artists and doctors, Jordin Sparks, Doug E. Fresh,  Dr. Mehmet Oz, and Dr. Olajide Williams.

You got to love the passion Dr. Oz and Dr. Williams are doing in spreading awareness on living a healthy life and finding alternatives to help keep the body healthy the natural way.  As we all know not all doctors are like Dr. Oz on listening and hearing what's the alternative on preventing and fighting disease aliments natural way without relying heavily on pharmaceutical drugs.

By any means necessary lets spread the word on a healthier way of life.

If you like the song, then go here Partnership For A Healthier America

DON'T TOUCH THAT!

"Germs"

Are you one of those that yells to someone, "DON'T TOUCH THAT!"  I am.  If you are, no need to be shy about it.  There are over millions of germs just lurking around waiting for it's prey to active that bacteria and spread.  Did you know an adult or child can touch over 10 objects within a minute time.  Lets think about this - hmm...  Before you touch an object like a public bathroom faucet or door knob someone before you and before that person etc. has touched it - millions of times and within that time there is always someone who does not wash his or her hands.  Then you come along and touched it.  Then it so happens you wipe your hands on your face or mouth.  The one touched you've done could have had E. Coli or any other live bacteria.  I'm pretty sure E. Coli.  How often do you practice safe germ protection?  Do you teach your child or love one the importance of bacteria prevention and what the damage can cause?  Don't be naive and think - "Well, my immune system is pretty strong enough to overcome."  But what about the other person who immune system is not strong enough and falls into the category of receiving an flesh eating bacteria?

We are in a time where bacteria has now become resistant to antibiotics.  Many young people are losing lives and body limbs because of germs.  Keep in mind we cannot always assume the other person practices safe germ protection.  When in doubt, always use precaution.  Remember in my post on Fighting Germs - "It takes 20 seconds to thoroughly wash your hands with soap to kill germs."

Where does germs most lurk and hide out at?

Well, according to the article, "Don't Touch That! 8 Ways to Protect Yourself From Germs in Public Places," done by AARP http://www.aarp.org/health/conditions-treatments/info-03-2011/8-germiest-places.html beware of the following locations and surfaces:

  • Restaurant menus
  • Lemon wedges (served with your beverage at restaurants)
  • Condiment Dispensers
  • Restroom Door Handles
  • Soap Dispensers
  • Grocery Carts
  • Airplane Bathrooms
  • Doctors' Offices

*Here is my own list that needs to be aware of:
  • Public Restroom Faucets (think you have to turn the water on)
  • Public Pool areas (especially dressing rooms and showers)
  • Gym facilities and showers
  • Never walk bare foot in any public area
  • Public Poles (subways, buses)
  • Public Benches
  • Water fountains
  • Soda/Beverage fountains
  • Supermarkets
If you feel the need to touch, then use a tissue.  Always wash hands.

In conclusion, we all should take precautions in spreading germs and learning the prevention you can pass on to family and friends.  Keep building up a strong immune system.

                                                              When in doubt, don't touch!

WHAT IS MY BODY TELLING ME?

"Self Tests"

Recently I went to a free Health Wellness Fair.  The fair had several vendor tables of people working in the medical and holistic alternative field.  They gave free high blood pressure testing, massages, food sensitivity test by muscle weakness in reaction to daily foods you normally consume, such as, wheat, corn, etc., foot and dental information.

I had stopped at two tables to get evaluated - acupuncture (which I am very familiar with - Chinese and Japanese style) and the food sensitive test.  I learned from the acupuncturist I have poor digestion (evaluated my eyes).  She said "bags under my eyes are big and it is because I have poor digestion. My spleen is weak."  Okay - I kind of knew because my intestines are severely scarred due to I have endometriosis (a painful chronic disease that effects over 6 million women) and I just had fibroids removed.  She said "there is not enough circulation going to the uterus and it's cold. And I needed to do more acupuncture to help with circulation and digestion."  Yes, it's been a while I did acupuncture treatments but must start it back again.

The other table I visited was the food sensitive test. I was very surprised to see this test was not done by needles or blood testing.  The woman applied Kinesiology.  It's testing of muscle strength to assess food sensitivity.  I had to lift my arm horizontally up and hold a suspected food that was in a container (wheat / gluten) and she applied pressure to the my arm to see how my strength was.  Her results "Wheat /Gluten Sensitive."  She advised me to "stay away from it for a few days to see how my body reacts without consuming any wheat products."  Very interesting because this could be one of the causes of my digestion problem as well since I eat wheat products all the time.

I found this site that had many questions to ask yourself "What is my body telling me?"

So, what is your body REALLY telling YOU?

WHERE DO YOU FOOD SHOP?

"The 12 Worst Supermarkets In America"
Recently, I stumbled upon an article about the worst supermarkets.  It had me thinking about where I shop and how I have to make long trips to different stores just to get a good deal, food quality, specialty items, and produce that my local supermarket does not carry.  Have you notice some item prices are extremely higher in certain neighborhoods? And most important the quality of the foods are just not fresh in some local neighborhoods.
This article hit on the right thing-  "Not all supermarkets are created equal."

CHEW ON THIS...

"How Long Have You Been On Medication?"
This morning I was reading the Metro paper and it had an interesting article about the serious side effects on Merck drug medications.  It had me thinking about how many people are on medication and for how long?  Do they know the long term side effects? And do they realize some drug medications can do more harm then helping them.

What are you doing to help combat in decreasing and eliminating your daily medications for your issues?
