BEST FOODS FOR A HEART HEALTHY CIRCULATION- REVEAL #2

"Better Blood Flow"

Eat those veggies

Here we go!  I'm revealing once again foods to give your body a better blood flow to the heart.  We all know the heart is the most vital organ of the human body without it our bodies cannot function at a normal rate.  We must take care of the heart as best as we can.

Organic Beets
(leafy greens are edible)

The vegetable beets improves blood circulation, aid in skin care, prevent cataracts, treatment of anemia, fight cancer cells, and helps respiratory problems.

The fruit grapes gives a better blood flow within three hours after eating one and a quarter cups of it.  At 60 calories a cup, is a sweet deal than eating a slice of cake.

Dark chocolate improves circulation because of the flavonoids (antioxidants) it provides.  By pass the snickers, twix, M&Ms, and grab in favor one ounce of pure dark chocolate that contains at least 60 percent cacao. (no imitation)

Whole grains has fiber and vital nutrients.  The better grains:

  • Oatmeal
  • Brown rice (organic is best)
  • Quinoa
  • Barley
  • Rye
  • Whole wheat breads and pastas
  • Bulgur
  • Popcorn (organic is best)
Spice roots, ginger, and turmeric are both anti-inflammatory herbs that gives a boost in circulation, lowering blood pressure, keeping the blood thin, anti-viral, lower cholesterol, and prevents internal blood clots.

Health Tip:  When shopping for leafy greens, always pick deep green.  Remember the darker the green, the more antioxidants and nitric oxide.  Organic is best.

BEST FOODS FOR HEART HEALTHY CIRCULATION - REVEAL #1

"A Better Heart"

Lately, more younger people are developing high blood pressure.  High blood pressure puts you at risk for heart disease and stroke - which are the leading causes of death in the United States.  About 70 million American adults have high blood pressure - that's 1 of every 3 adults.  Are you in that category?  If so, what are you doing about it?

4 RISK FACTORS TO TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT
  1. High cholesterol levels.  High levels of the bad LDL cholesterol contribute to the buildup of arterial plaque.
  2. High blood pressure.  The higher your blood pressure, the more your arteries swell and stretch. Keep in mind blood pressure is considered high if it's consistently at or above 140/90 mmHg.
  3. Coronary artery calcium score.  This a direct measurement of the amount of plaque in your arteries.  The higher the score, the more plaque you have and more preventive measures you and your doctor need to consider.  For example, drug medications.
  4. Diabetes.  High blood sugar drives inflammation that can damage the endothelium.  Uncontrolled blood sugar levels can narrow the arteries.

The next future posts I will reveal to you foods that can help you with healthy circulation to the heart.

Let's start with...
Focusing on Fruits

  • Watermelon
  • Avocado
  • Blueberries
  • Cranberries
  • Grapes
  • Kiwi
  • Oranges

Eat at least two cups each day.

FEBRUARY IS THE MONTH OF RECOGNITION - HEART AWARENESS

"Happy Birthday To You..."

Celebrating the "Heart"
2016 another year

It's CELEBRATION TIME!  Once again we must celebrate and honor the main organ that gives us 100,000 times of heartbeats a day.  Everyday is a miracle blessing.  Are you continuing in taking loving care of that precious heart of yours?  I hope so because without that care our bodies cannot be at its best to function and may not make it to that next birthday.

Learn and understand the risks factors of cardiovascular disease, such as, obesity, inactivity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.  By maintaining a healthy diet, getting exercise (being active), and not smoking you can control the risk factors to help protect that heart of yours.

IT'S A CELEBRATION! DID YOU FORGET?

"February Is Heart Month"

Every year we MUST CELEBRATE THE HEART

The heart beats 100,000 times a day and 35 million times a year.  It's one of the "main organs" that needs special attention.  Did you know heart disease and stroke are two of America's leading causes of death?  According to the American Heart Association heart disease is the No.1 killer of women and is more deadly than the all forms of cancer combine.

Hispanic women are more likely to develop heart disease 10 years earlier than Caucasian women.  African Americans are the highest in having high blood pressure in the world.  High blood pressure is more severe in blacks than whites but develops early in life.

What are the symptoms for heart attacks to be aware of?
  1. Shortness of breath
  2. Back pain
  3. Jaw pain
  4. Nausea
  5. Flu like symptoms *are often reported weeks and days before a heart attack
  6. Sweating
  7. Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, sore pain in center of chest that lasts more than a few minutes or comes and goes
  8. Pain either in one arm or both arms
  9. Pain in stomach
  10. Lightheadedness
  11. Vomiting

What are the signs of a stroke?
  1. Numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg *especially on one side of the body
  2. Confusion
  3. Trouble speaking and understanding
  4. Trouble seeing or blurred vision in one or both eyes
  5. Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  6. Severe headache
*Do not wait more than five minutes if experiencing any of the above symptoms.  Seek medical assistance as soon as possible.

What can I do to avoid developing a heart attack or stroke?

You must eat healthy!

Healthy = fresh vegetables + fresh fruits + increase whole grains + probiotics + reduce sodium + no smoking + read labels + avoid trans fat (partially or hydrogenated oils) + limit alcohol + no drugs + limit or eliminate red meats + avoid food preservatives + avoid sodium nitrates + reduce stress + avoid process package foods + drink water + drink herbal or green teas + reduce take out foods + eat wholesome homemade foods + adapt to a Mediterranean Diet + adapt to a Vegetarian Diet (at least 75%) + adapt to eating organic or locally grown (at least 50%) + ask your doctors how you are able to reduce or eliminate your prescription drugs (look into alternative ways to by manage your health issues) + snack on seeds + snack on raw or roasted unsalted nuts

 And...

Get Moving
Add some physical exercise activity every week

DAYS LIKE THIS...

Love it or Hate it

When we get snow or rainy days on the East coast I like to stay in doors and just relax with a nice cup of tea, movie, and good food.

My choice of a hot cup of tea...

A touch of Cinnamomum Cassia bark gives it a spice kick

Hibiscus (Hibiscus Sabdariffa)
A beautiful flower (Mallow family) that has many health benefits.  (Thank you Mother Nature)
The flower is also known as agua de flor de Jamaica, rosa de Jamaica.  Hibiscus tea is referred as "sour tea" in Iran.  Originally from Angola and now cultivated throughout Sudan, Egypt, Thailand, Mexico, India, and China.

Hibiscus is very high in antioxidants and vitamin C - especially dried flowers.  It contains glycosides hibiscin, gossypetin, quercetin, and the active flavonoids delphinidin and cyanidin.  The natural compound gives it the deep red color.  The flavonoids in the hibiscus flower helps dilate blood vessels for the heart.  Hibiscus has a good side effect for the heart in maintaining blood pressure and cholesterol.  Plus helps to maintain normal body temperature.

Hibiscus is not only excellent for heart health maintenance but for quite a few other areas in the body that can be beneficial for optimal health.

More Beneficial Health Performance

  • Immune System.  The vitamin C in the flower helps develop and keep the white blood cells active ( a bonus to fight off infections and reduce inflammation).
  • Digestion and Bowl function.  Can relieve constipation, gas, and bloating.
  • Water Retention.  Encourage fluid balance in the body.
  • Weight Loss.  Helps break down starches and sugar.
  • Upper Respiratory.
  • Positive impact on the liver.
  • Toxic to cancer cells.
  • Reduces estrogen levels.  *Those on birth control, hormone replacement therapy, pregnant, or breastfeeding should avoid the tea.
*Hibiscus flower is one powerful plant in which precautions need to be mention.
  1. Individuals who has low blood pressure must avoid drinking Hibiscus tea.
  2. Pregnant women and breastfeeding women should avoid because hibiscus can stimulate the uterus.
  3. People who are on pharmaceutical drugs - acetaminophen (a common over the counter pain reliever) and anti-inflammatory drugs should be careful with regard in consumption of Hibiscus tea.  Why? The natural compound hibiscus flower is made of can counteract in the process of the drugs.  That is why you really need to sit down with your doctor on finding ways on how to start decreasing the amount of medical drugs you are taking and look into more of the natural remedies that Mother Nature has to offer.  These pharmaceutical drugs can do more harm to the body than helping with a solution to the problem.  The body needs to heal and strengthen not put a band aid on the problem and cause havoc to other organs.
What to do?

Blood Pressure Maintenance

One 8oz cup of Hibiscus tea 2x a day
Restlessness

Add Lemon Balm and Chamomile to Hibiscus tea

Cholesterol

One 8oz cup of Hibiscus tea 2x a day

*Note:  The Cinnmomum Cassia should not be preferred as the "True" cinnamon.  Ceylon Cinnamon is the "True" cinnamon.  Difference is the Cassia bark is thick, darker, and hard (in picture).  Ceylon cinnamon is light in color, brittle, and thinner.   The Cassia cinnamon is the well known and mostly in all supermarkets than the Ceylon Cinnamon. (You will most likely have to venture out of your neighborhood markets to look for this cinnamon.  It's worth it and better (less toxic on the liver).  I like to use the Ceylon cinnamon for a medical effect tea than the Cassia.  The Cassia I like to use in cooking and adding spiciness to my teas or hot chocolate.

My food choice...

Turkey & Cheddar cheese sandwich with mustard and tomatoes
(No nitrates and preservatives)

A snowy day like this cannot get me down especially not with the comfort of a nice tea and a good sandwich.

So, what do you do on a day like this? Or a rainy day?

FEBRUARY AMERICAN HEART MONTH

"Main Organ That Beats 3 Billion Times"
"Heart"

Why not celebrated it!  Everyday is a blessing.  Your heart beats 100,000 times a day and 35 million times a year.  An average human life can beat about 3 billion times.  You got to love the heart.
Facts about the heart.
  • Located almost to the center of the chest and between the lungs.
  • The aorta largest artery in the body.
  • Pumps about 1 million barrels of blood during the average lifetime.
  • Two stages of the heart beat - Systole and Diastole.
  • Pumps blood through the blood vessels called the circulatory system.
  • Three main types of blood vessels - Arteries, Capillaries, and Veins.
  • The major blood vessels that enter the heart - Superior vena cava, Inferior vena cava, and Pulmonary veins.
  • The pulmonary artery and aorta exit the heart and carries oxygen blood to the whole body.
  • Heart is the size of a fist.
  • There are four valves - Mitral, Tricuspid, Aortic, and Pulmonic valve.
Problems of the heart and circulatory system.
Over 64 million Americans have some type of cardiac problem.

  • Congenital heart defects (common sign a heart murmur).
  • Arrhythmia.
  • Cardiomyopathy.
  • Coronary artery disease *most common heart disorder in adults caused by atherosclerosis.
  • Hypercholesterolemia * high cholesterol.
  • Hypertension *high blood pressure.
  • Kawasaki disease (affects the mucous membranes, skin, and the lymph nodes).
  • Rheumatic heart disease (complication of untreated strep throat infection).
  • Stroke *occur when blood supply to the brain is cut off or blood vessel in brain bursts.
The heart organ works so hard to give us the breath of life.  A complication to the heart affects it tremendously and it has to work overtime.  A main reason why we all need to take care of our bodies so we can have those billion heart beats.  Every year a birthday comes around we celebrate it.  Why? Birthdays are a blessing.  A day that you make it to another day to another week another year it needs a celebration.  A day to sit or stand at the table to hear everyone sing and shout your name, to laugh, and embrace the love is a wonderful moment of blessing time.  A time not to waste.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!!
EVERY BREATH TO BLOW

Another years of celebration ...
