TIME AND MONEY SAVING JUICING TIPS

"Juicing Tuesday"

It's that day again!  As the weather heats up we must hydrate our bodies to get the proper nutrients and water intake as possible.  I came across a newsletter, Mind Body Green, article "4 Tips for Green Juicing When You're Super-Busy" by Sara Sturgis.  I thought this would be perfect for today for our Juicing/Blending lovers.

Lets, all check out her helpful tips on how to get ahead start in our juicing routine.

Another informative tip I have for you all is what produces are best to buy "organic" and "not organic" in which can save you money in buying.

Always buy organic and local (try your best) on the below The Dirty Dozen Plus (highest amount of pesticides)
  1. Strawberries
  2. Blueberries
  3. Raspberries
  4. Grapes
  5. Blackberries
  6. Apples
  7. Celery
  8. Tomatoes
  9. Hot Peppers
  10. Sweet Bell Peppers
  11. Peaches
  12. Pears
  13. Apricots
  14. Nectarines (imported)
  15. Potatoes
  16. Spinach
  17. Kale
  18. Swiss Chard
  19. Turnips
  20. Collard Greens
  21. Dandelion Greens
  22. Squash
The Clean Fifteen (least amount of pesticides)
  1. Asparagus
  2. Avocados
  3. Cabbage
  4. Cantaloupe
  5. Sweet Corn
  6. Eggplant
  7. Grapefruit
  8. Kiwi
  9. Mangoes
  10. Mushrooms
  11. Onions
  12. Papayas
  13. Pineapples
  14. Sweet peas (frozen)
  15. Sweet potatoes
I know it's hard to buy organic produce because stores jack up the prices.  What I normally do is  comparison shop.  I compare prices at Whole Foods supermarkets, Trader Joes, local supermarkets in my neighborhood, and farmer's markets.  Plus, as I stated in past posts I tend to grow the most expensive foods that are sold in the supermarkets.  This is imperative to do.  I highly recommend if you have an area in your home with a sunny location - utilize that space and start growing your own foods.  By becoming a "green thumb" person you are in control of what is put on your foods from the very start once the seeds starts sprouting.  This saves $, puts you in a "good mood" relieving stress, and you will get in the habit of eating a healthy diet.

Besides comparison shopping and growing my own produce, I have a system I normally do.  For example, If I know I will be eating or utilizing any produce skin, then I will buy organic produce- such as, lemons and limes.  Sometimes I cave in and buy conventional leafy greens at my neighborhood supermarket because I can't get to a Whole Foods supermarket that day until another day when I'm in the city.  Unfortunately, health foods stores in my area are long distance from where I live.  Sad, but true.  What I do notice that my local supermarket has created a "health aisle" in their store but the prices are doubled than a health food store.

In conclusion, it's all about strategizing and learning different alternative ways on how to go about it.  Learn to be a "wise shopper."

MOVE OVER STEAKS AND BURGERS... HELLO

"Wild Salmon"

Baked Wild Salmon

Did you know having a high protein "red meat" diet every day can cause harm to your skeleton bones, according to the May issue, Spry Living.  http://spryliving.com/articles/10-foods-that-are-bad-for-your-bones/

Omega 3 fatty acids in wild salmon can help reduce high inflammation in your body and boost your good HDL cholesterol.  Wild salmon is rich in vitamin D, iron, and high quality protein.  Farmed raised salmon has reduced levels of protein and healthy omega 3 fats.  Farmed raised salmon has levels of carcinogenic substances and other toxins.

Wild Salmon is a good mood booster as well.  (see posting on Salmon)

Healthy tip:
Homemade marinades are the best. Utilizing fresh herbs and vegetables are excellent choices in preparing salmon.

Overnight Marinade

Wild Salmon makes a wonderful main course meal.

Baked sweet plantains, pesto quinoa, steamed organic swiss chard, & baked wild salmon

Buyer's tip:
  1. Always ask your seafood butcher if the salmon has any red dye.  Why?  Some companies will add red dye in the salmon so the fish can look pink or a deep pink color.  Read Labels!
  2. Always ask if the salmon was cloned (GE).  Why?  Genetically Engineered salmon will be entering in our food supply (grocery stores and restaurants) soon due to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) stated "it was safe to eat."  Click here http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2252379/AquaAdvantage-Frankenfish-salmon-set-hit-shelves-FDA-finds-super-growing-fish-safe-eating.html
  3. Always buy "Wild" seafood.
  4. There is no such thing as organic fish, shrimp, or any other seafood.
  5. Always ask your seafood butcher is this "actual salmon."  Why?  Many markets are doing "bait and switch."  They put labels up to say "salmon" or whatever fish you are inquiring about and it's "not the actual" aquatic vertebrates you've requested.  Same goes for any other type of seafood.
  6. Know your fish.  Try to have an idea what the aquatic vertebrates look like if purchasing whole.
  7. Inspect your fish.  Make sure the fish is up to the fresh standard (smell, color, and parasites).

                                                                                                          Enjoy

ARTIFICIAL CRAP

Food Ingredients that are Toxic

Did you know over 50% of the American diet has toxic ingredients in it. That’s right! Foods that has been canned, dehydrated, or had chemicals added to it is known as “processed food”.

Last month the FDA had a debate on the “artificial coloring” in foods in which reports from parents and a research was done on the effect of the coloring has on kids causing them to be hyperactive. I’m not surprised at this finding. Just disappointed that the FDA took too long to wake up on the issue. Recently, FDA decided, “they need more evidence” on the issue. How long will they wait in banning artificial colorings and chemicals in foods and non-foods? There are other countries already has a ban on some chemicals. Why is that the United States tend to drag their feet on taking action in banning “unhealthy stuff”. Research after research and still nothing is done.

If the U.S. FDA would not make a move in eliminating chemicals from foods, then I suggest everyone take his/her “own” action and stop buying the crap.

Here is a list in which you need to avoid when buying food products:

  • PALM OIL

  • SHORTENING

  • WHITE FLOUR, RICE, PASTA, AND BREAD

  • HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP

  • ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS

  • SODIUM BENZOATE AND POTASSIUM BENZOATE

  • BUTYLATED HYDROXYANISOLE (BHA)

  • SODIUM NITRATES AND SODIUM NITRITES

  • BLUE, GREEN, RED, AND YELLOW COLORING

  • MSG (MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE)

  • PRESERVATIVES

Be wise and make the right choice for you and your family.

Love the Body!
